Notes: A wartime printing of the 'cheap edition' of this collection of stories depicting a French cavalry officer during the Napoleonic Wars. The copy of Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery ('Monty'), it is tempting to think that this fictional account of an earlier conflict may have been his reading during his own military exploits - and the condition of the book certainly supports that suggestion, although the title with which he inscribes his copy was only conferred on him after the War.
