Notes: The 'historical account' is by Jonas Hanway, who amongst his many other activities (such as popularising the umbrella) founded the Marine Society in 1756. The premise was to create a group of ship owners and merchants to supply sailors, and to equip them with the proper gear. During the war years of 1756-1763, more than ten thousand men and boys were thus fitted out for duty at sea. From the library of Sir Timothy Waldo (d. 1786), wealthy lawyer and City merchant who purchased Hever Castle in Kent in 1749.
