Notes: A scarce book, NLS and Bodley only on LibraryHub. The author was Jessie Cunningham Howden (née Mylne), wife of Haddington doctor Thomas Howden - they occupied the same house in the town as had Jane Welsh Carlyle in her childhood, as the daughter of Howden's predecessor, Dr John Welsh. The same printer had undertaken her earlier volume, 'Some Autumn Leaves', two years earlier. There is a small section of 'Humorous Pieces', including the plaintive 'Sung in Scotland by an English Exile', and the volume closes with translations from German, but the verse is, in the main, religious in character -...more
