Notes: Inscribed by the author on the title-page: 'Neville Williams, with many thanks for your help, Airey Neave, June 1973'. The recipient was a fellow-historian, and secretary of the British Academy from the year of this presentation until his death in 1977. Neave himself died in tragic circumstances a couple of years later when, as Northern Ireland secretary in Thatcher's shadow cabinet, a bomb planted under his car outside the House of Commons by the Irish National Liberation Army killed him within hours.
