The first of Simon's two volumes of memoir, recounting his journey from Paris, to the heart of London's culinary scene - involved in various literary and epicurean societies, including founding the Wine and Food Society with A.J.A. Symons, he was 'regarded as the leading authority in the world on wine and gastronomy, although he himself never learned to cook' (ODNB).
