Notes: The illustrations are the work of the young David Cornwell - later better known by his nom-de-plume (in this context, almost a pun), John le Carré. It was not the first time Knight and Cornwell had worked together - they were earlier colleagues, Knight a mentor to the younger man, at MI5.
