Notes: Inscribed by the author on the title-page: 'Field-Marshal Earl Wavell, homini omnium consensu cum militia tum litteris et humanitate excellentissimo, Desmond Young'. Wavell is thanked at the head of the Acknowledgements for 'appreciations of Rommel as a commander' and is mentioned at numerous points during the text - including for having been unique among British Generals in earning Rommel's explicit praise (p. 148).
