Notes: Inscribed by the translator to the front cover: 'For Margaret[?] Green, from Helen Waddell, Dec. 12 1944'. The translation from Milton's Latin is dedicated to the memory of her nephew, George Frederick Waddell Martin, who had died in the ongoing War the year before, 'And of the men, his brothers-in-arms, who died young'. In Waddell's excellent translation, Milton's expression of grief retains its power three centuries on.
