Notes: An excellent association copy of this chapter (VIII) from the larger history. In his letter presenting this extract, on paper headed to The Athenaeum, Cecil writes to Sir Algernon Law to thank him for the 'assistance' offered during his research, considering that 'I cannot hope you will concur in all I say, but I trust you will none the less accept this little book as the only recognition of your kindness that I can make'.
