Notes: A late draft of Brown's translation, published by Elek in 1957; in the present form it includes a dedication to Paul Elek, in the form of a 5pp. Translator's Foreword jettisoned by the time the book appeared in print (perhaps at the recommendation of the dedicatee). A controversial book, with a complex history, the author's critique of French colonialism in North Africa; it was published pseudonymously in an abridged form in 1938, then in a new form excised from the larger work with explanatory passages added (the basis for this translation), and finally in full in 1968.
