Notes: Wynne's 'precipitous decline from gentility to indigence' is outlined in ODNB. His General History of the British Empire in America, 1771, gained some favourable attention, but his General History of Ireland (at the suggestion of Goldsmith), 1772, is held 'in little esteem', as Lowndes has it.
