Notes: Scarce. The occasion was the commutation of the death sentence 'in front of the troops', passed on Private William Nowland 'for striking his Captain.' This was printed for distribution among the troops: possibly the troops did not much relish the tract, and so discarded it. In his peroration, the Rev. Hough tells the troops how fortunate they are - 'You are better off than the great bodies of men engaged in manufacturing or in agricultural employments; better off, perhaps, than two-thirds of the whole English population; and incomparably better paid, better fed, better clothed, better lodged, ...more
