Notes: His second play; Butler left his native South Africa to fight in the Second World War, and thereafter studied at Brasenose College, Oxford. He returned to his homeland to take up a professorship at Rhodes University; the present work is set there, in the early years of the twentieth-century, and includes a glossary of terms, including Afrikaans, at the rear. The dustjacket blurb compares it favourably with the work of Eliot, Christopher Fry, Ronald Duncan and Anne Ridler.
