Notes: The author's own copy, signed by him on the title-page and with his tipped-in typed note to the half-title, explaining the background to this edition - pirated by Ron Smith for Horwitz, where Smith and Baxter both worked. The story had been serialised under this title in New Worlds magazine, but was published by Ace in the US as 'The Off Worlders'. 'Fortunately', Baxter considers, Don Wolheim of Ace 'never saw this printing, or, if he did, didn't care'.
