Description: FIRST EDITION, title within border of printer's ornaments, cropped at foot, as w the preliminary leaves with signatures touched, and 2 leaves cut very close at the fore-edge, with the engraved map of the Heptarchy (trimmed a little at head and foot), numerous and various woodcut initials, text mainly in black letter with occasional Anglo-Saxon characters, final leaf partly stuck to fly-leaf (the verso is blank), without the additional leaf signed H2 ('The names of the Kentish writers'), a modicum of light browning and occasional damp-staining pp. [xvi], 435, 4to, 18th-century sheep, double gilt fillets on sides, spine gilt with a crest (an arm, holding a scimitar aloft), in each compartment, twin red and black lettering pieces, attractive marbled end leaves, spine restored, bookplate of Eric Gerard Stanley, early initials JW at the end of the Dedication

'What was in time intended as the first instalment of a historical topography of England was completed in draft in 1570, read in manuscript by Parker and Lord Burghley, and published as Perambulation of Kent: Containing the Description, Hystorie and Customs of that Shyre (1576). The earliest county history, based on wide and critical reading (partly informed by Lambarde's protestant suspicion of monks and their works), it draws also on Domesday Book and on royal charters, and includes in its climatic, economic, social, religious, and historical survey a shor...more
