Notes: The Carruthers are more or less synonymous with Dumfries, and Annandale, and are closely associated with clan Bruce. We are not sure exactly who our John was, but he was clearly a scion of that house, as well as an ardent patriot. The prefatory Address is to The Inhabitants of Annandale, 'the principal bulwark of the nation [against invasion].' The text begins with the mythic origins of the Scots, and closes with the death of The Bruce.
