Description: FIRST SEPARATE EDITIONS, first printings with the exception of 'East Coker' (the fourth impression), the first two volumes with the pencilled annotations of Dr J.P. Pattinson (see below), occasional light spotting, pp. 15; 15; 15; 16, 8vo, original wrappers of different colours, stapled (including the last volume, sometimes seen sewn), the staples a little rusted, the final volume clean except for some fading around the spine, the others with some pressure-marks, spotting and soiling, all vols with contemporary ownership inscription of J.P. Pattinson to flyleaf/half-title, the flyleaf of 'Burnt Norton' nicked and creased at top corner, photo with inscription to Pattinson from his 'batman' laid in to last volume with a few literary notes by Pattinson on a separate slip and a newspaper clipping, good

Notes: J.P. Pattinson was a critic and translator who attended Emmanuel College, Cambridge. 'East Coker' had first appeared, in two editions, as a supplement to the New English Weekly in Easter of 1940; 'Burnt Norton' had been included in Eliot's Collected Poems from 1936; the latter two poems from the sequence make their first appearance in this form.
