Description: woodcut printer's device on title, with a woodcut map (almost full-page) and numerous illustrations in the text, woodcut initials, lacks the final leaf, blank except for printer's device on verso, a little water-staining at the beginning, pp. [xvi],907, [101], 8vo, contemporary calf, roll tooled borders on sides, traces of gilt, fine impressions of a medallion stamp at the centre of both covers, single stamp in each of the compartments of the spine, again traces of gilt, early paper label lettered in ink, blue edges, minor abrasions and corners a bit worn, slight cracking to joints, recased (probably in ealy 20th-century Sweden, to judge by the endpapers and provenance), 18th-century octagonal engraved armorial bookplate (presumably preserved from earlier endleaves), stamp of Maj och Bertil Josephson on fly-leaf, later bookplate of Eric Gerard Stanley

Notes: Though a little worn, still an attractive copy, recased, but not as it were sophisticated, of the famous Historia de gentibus septentrionalibus, first printed in Rome in 1555. It is a patriotic work of folklore and history which long remained for the rest of Europe the authority on Swedish matters. This text on dark winters, violent currents and beasts of the sea and the like amazed the rest of Europe. It was translated into Italian (1565), German (1567), English (1658) and Dutch (1665), and not until 1909 into Swedish.
