Notes: First collective edition, in the 'ideal and most usual' (Yolton) order. Published anonymously, the Advertisement rather gives the game away. 'The last four years of Locke's life were spent quietly at Oates, his visits to London becoming less frequent and very much briefer than before. He published nothing after the fourth edition of the Essay, though he continued to note down minor improvements, incorporated into the posthumous fifth edition (1706).
