Description: FIRST EDITION of the first part of Corneille's translation to be published, with additional engraved title, Latin and French texts on facing pages, engraved title and letterpress title browned, occasional spotting or light staining, pp. [i], [viii], 56, [1], 12mo, contemporary speckled calf, double gilt fillets on sides, spine gilt in compartments, lettered in gilt direct, a little worn at extremities, various early, illegible notes and scribbles on end-leaves, preserved in a dark blue morocco pull-off box by Riviere & Son

Notes: The very rare first part of Corneille's translation to be published: further parts came out at intervals, and the work was complete in 1656. This translation (which proved lucrative) coincided with Corneille's first retirement from the stage.Inside the front cover is the slightly bizarre bookplate of G. Vanel, c. 1890. The central panel has his name, and Ars longo vita brevis lettered vertically, with 4 surrounding panels, featuring the heads of tigers, elephants, vultures, and whole peacocks.
