Notes: A nice copy. Bates himself wrote of this book 'I think my own part in it is as good as I have done, and some of the woodcuts are masterly'. The handsome bookplate is that of Oswald Lewis, son of department-store magnate John Lewis and at this time - the bookplate is dated 1937 - a Conservative MP; he was ex of Christ Church College, Oxford.
