'The Miscellany has a respected place in literary history' (May), with contributions by Steele, Pope, Phillips, Philips, Lady Winchelsea, Parnell, Young, Gay, Tickell, Wharton, et. al. Among the others is James Ward, later Dean of Cloyne, who contributed The Smock-Race, at Finglas. 'The Smock-Race may be part of the Shepherd's Week sequence, though it does not follow classical models like Gay's pastorals except insofar as the games may be considered mock-heroic.
