Notes: Gill's engravings are exhibitionist in their conjunction of the religious and the erotic - Powys Mathers' poem essays a similar union, but Gill's capacity for exploration exceeded the poet's and four of the illustrations he provided were deemed too obscene, with the publisher's inserted note (not present here) advising that they could be obtained direct from the artist.
