Notes: First published in 1621 in Paris, then by the Elzeviers in 1627, this is one of 3 (or possibly 4) editions published by Elzevier in 1630. Bibliographer's disagree about the number of editions, one of 708 pages, though mentioned by Brunet, is apparently a ghost: however, one might mention that in the present edition the last page of text is numbered 705 and the Table makes up another 3. Rahir gives priority to this edition. Barclay's 'greatest work ... published posthumously in Paris in 1621 and dedicated to Louis XIII of France, suggesting that even then Barclay was seeking a new sponsor. It i...more
