Description: FIRST EDITION, author's monogram to colophon printed in red, a small patch of paper adhesion to surface at head of opening page (not affecting text), pages browned, ownership inscription of 'E. Herzog' to half-title (see below), pp. [vi], 360, crown 8vo, contemporary binding of quarter brown morocco and green marbled boards, the backstrip lettered in gilt with the letters 'E.H' stamped at foot (see below), a little wear to edges, page-marker, blue marbled endpapers, bookplate of André Maurois to front pastedown (see below), very good

Notes: An excellent association copy, linking two eminent French Jewish writers of successive generations: all of the marks of ownership are those of André Maurois, who was born Émile Herzog - with his ownership inscription under that name within, and the initials to the spine, suggesting that he had owned it since himself 'un jeune homme', whilst the bookplate of his nom de plume (and later legal name) would seem to indicate that it was kept into maturity.
