Notes: A complete course of lectures on surgery from Mederer's course at the University of Freiburg. Mederer (1739-1805), a native of Vienna, came from a medical family. He began his career as a military surgeon. In 1773 he was appointed professor of surgery and obstetrics at Freiburg (then part of Austria). He caused a storm by suggesting that the professions of surgeon and physician be equated. In 1795 he resumed military service, as the chief surgical officer of all Austrian armies.The student who wrote out these notes (or at any rate owned them) was one B.J. Pfankuch.
