Publisher's Synopsis
Wanderers is a novel written by Knut Hamsun, a Norwegian author and Nobel Prize winner. The book tells the story of two wanderers, August and Edevart, who travel through the Norwegian countryside in the late 19th century. August is a dreamer and a poet, while Edevart is a practical man who seeks to make a living by selling his wares. Together, they encounter a variety of people and situations, including a wealthy landowner, a group of traveling performers, and a young woman named Ylajali, who captures August's heart. As they journey through the countryside, August and Edevart navigate the challenges of poverty, hunger, and social isolation. They also confront the complexities of human relationships, including jealousy, betrayal, and forgiveness. Throughout the novel, Hamsun's lyrical prose captures the beauty and harshness of the Norwegian landscape, as well as the joys and sorrows of the human experience. Wanderers is a compelling work of literary fiction that explores themes of identity, love, and the search for meaning in a rapidly changing world. It is a timeless classic that continues to resonate with readers today. It has always been a pleasure to me to watch the flowers and insects in their struggle to keep alive. When the sun was hot they would come to life again, and give themselves up for an hour or so to the old delight; the big, strong flies were just as much alive as in midsummer. There was a peculiar sort of earth-bug here that I had not seen before--little yellow things, no bigger than a small-type comma, yet they could jump several thousand times their own length. Think of the strength of such a body in proportion to its size! There is a tiny spider here with its hinder part like a pale yellow pearl. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
