Although David's masculine demeanor belies the fact that he is homosexual, he has no predilection for publicly advocating with the growing gay community in his hometown of San Francisco in the early 1970's. David's pursuit for personal happiness takes him to Los Angeles, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, and New York.
