Publisher's Synopsis
Through his personal snapshots, the everyday German soldier became a major contributor to the historical record of the Second World War. A great number of German soldiers owned a camera and took it on campaign. Many of their photographs were lost in the chaos of the war or destroyed afterwards by their creators to hide guilt or shame, or to obliterate memory. Yet, large numbers did survive and can still be found today in junk shops, antique malls, estate sales and auction houses around the world. Via these forgotten images, we catch a glimpse of the war through the eyes of the men who were there.
