Publisher's Synopsis

The Hill House is arguably Charles Rennie Mackintosh's residential masterpiece. Scottish architect, Mackintosh and his wife Margaret created almost everything from the building itself to the furniture and textiles.A prominent example of the Modern Style (British Art Nouveau), Hill House was designed and built for the publisher Walter Blackie in 1902-1904.Until recently, this iconic building was suffering prolonged decay from over a century of weather damage. Mackintosh was a revolutionary designer, however the materials and techniques at the cutting edge of architectural design in the early 1900s have not withstood the test of time. This publication also features 'The Box', created by London-based architectural practice Carmody Groarke. Made of stainless-steel chain-mail mesh, this 'temporarily museum' shrouds the Hill House as a protective enclosure, halting the decay while maintaining access to visitors and providing time for the restoration of this gem in Scotland's architectural heritage.
